About the Chip

How the Chip works

A ChampionChip is a miniature transponder containing a silicon chip and an energising coil. The transponder is inactive until moved into a magnetic field generated by a send antenna in a timing mat.

When the ChampionChip enters the magnetic field, the energising coil produces an electric current to power the chip which then transmits its unique identification number to a receive antenna in the timing mat.

This unique identification number and the time of the transmission are passed to a computer database containing the details of the identification number and associated athlete information. In this way the time taken to run between sets of timing mats (start to finish or intermediate split points) can be calculated.

Precautions

To ensure correct operation of the ChampionChip in running events, it must be worn either on the running shoe or around the ankle using a strap. If worn anyway else it is unlikely to become energised by the timing mats and therefore times will not be recorded for the associated runner. Also, because each ChampionChip in an event is assigned to a specific runner, care must be taken not to inadvertently exchange chips with another runner which would result in incorrect times being recorded against runners.
